MPA - History
After years of research, hard work, and a commitment to providing a college preparatory curriculum focused on educating the whole child, founders Bob Kreischer and Sandy Kreischer Smith witnessed their dream become a reality as the doors of Mounds Park Academy opened for the first time in the fall of 1982.
With a group of highly committed parents, administrators, and teachers, slightly over 100 students hit the ground running that fall. Soon sports teams and extracurricular clubs were formed, friendships were cultivated, and students became active participants in classrooms where the joy of learning and the spirit of community were celebrated each day.
MPA was originally going to be located in the Mounds Park neighborhood of St. Paul. By the time the school opened, the location changed to Larpenteur Avenue; however, the school's name, innovation, and mission remained the same.
The reputation of this amazing school quickly spread and the student body steadily grew year after year. Four years later, MPA quadrupled its enrollment and celebrated its first graduating class of nine students! Today MPA has approximately 600 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, and graduates as many as 75 students each year who then move on to well-respected colleges and universities throughout the United States.
Not only has the student body flourished, but the campus facilities have as well. To accommodate the burgeoning fine arts curriculum which includes choirs, orchestras, bands, drama and a strong visual arts program, an auditorium, small theatre, art gallery and choir room were constructed a decade after the school was founded.
More recently, MPA expanded its facilities with the addition of a four-court sports center, over a dozen new Upper School classrooms and science labs, and a student commons. Improvements also included a new Pre-Kindergarten, recital hall, and many new trees and plants throughout the 32-acre campus. This major renovation not only allowed for a wonderful new green space for student learning and exercise, but helped MPA reorganize its classrooms, leading to more defined "homes" for each division within the school building.
From its inception through today, MPA has provided unique learning opportunities for students in a challenging, yet nurturing, environment establishing itself as a top-tier college preparatory school in the Twin Cities.
