Opportunities for Involvement

Mounds Park Academy strives to provide a variety of outlets for students and faculty to talk about issues related to diversity, both in the classroom and in our global community. Here is just a sample of some of the opportunities available.

Amnesty International - Amnesty International's efforts include student presentations on human rights' abuses, movie nights to expand the community's awareness of human rights' abuses, and hosting guest speakers. Click here to read about MPA's Amnesty International goals.

Mosaic - Mosaic is a student organization dedicated to promoting and celebrating ethnic and cultural diversity. Members work to bring the MPA community together through a Cultural Fair, the Festival of Lights, and other scheduled events throughout the year. One of the biggest events of the school year is the Cultural Fair. Click here to learn more about this student-run event celebrating diversity.

SEED - The Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) Project on Inclusive Curriculum is a professional development program designed to help faculty and staff envision inclusive education that reflects the history, culture, perspectives, contributions and voices of all people. Through use of literature, speakers, multimedia, and conversation, participants connect and reconnect with their own personal multi-faceted identities and then expand their awareness and appreciation of other identities. To learn more about the engaging activities the faculty and staff have been involved in, click here.

Breakthrough Saint Paul (BSP) - BSP is a Mounds Park Academy program implemented in partnership with Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS).  BSP does two things.  First, it provides a tuition-free, six-year, academic enrichment program that helps motivated, under-resourced middle and high school students from SPPS succeed in rigorous coursework in school and get to college. Second it attracts a diverse group of talented high school and college students to the teaching profession. The program addresses both missions with a program model called "Students Teaching Students." MPA students are involved as tutors and aspiring teachers, and MPA faculty have also served as mentor teachers. For more information about BSP, please visit their Web site.

Parent Group on Student Learning - This group is comprised of parents, learning specialists and administrators from the MPA community who are interested in how students learn. The group meets six times a year and focuses on community resources and support that is available for students with learning differences. To find out more, contact one of the Learning Specialists, Robyn Kramer or Patti Osman. You can also read minutes from our previous meetings.

Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) - GSA is a group that welcomes gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning people (GLBTQ) together with straight allies. We are dedicated to fighting homophobia and heterosexism. We seek through education, activism and socialization to build awareness of, and respect for, GLBTQ people. For more information about GSA's goals, or to learn more about their campus activities, such as National Coming Out Day, click here.
