Word of the Week

“The colossal fireworks exploded like streaking rainbows in the sky causing a lot of hubbub that day, but then it was over.”  A fourth grader wrote this beautiful sentence.  You might wonder where he would get such vocabulary words.  He picked them up at lunch! Yes, every Monday I announce the “Word for the Week” and suggest that children try to figure out what it means and use it as often as they can in their conversations and writings.  It is wonderful to hear the children applying the words.  A second grader wrote this one; “My mother and I are very effervescent!”  We truly are having fun with these words.  The word this week is, “gusto.”  If you haven’t heard it yet at home, you might slip it into a conversation and see what the response is from your child.  I will continue to let you know what the word is each week to give you another way to share the school day with your child.

Kudos to the third graders for their Poetry and Pastry event!  The children and teachers worked hard to make sure that each child felt proud of their presentation….and proud they were!  Thanks to your help at home in preparing your child as well as to the teachers for all of their extra work.  This is where the seeds are planted for feeling comfortable speaking in front of a large group.

Thank you also for all of the box tops that flowed in over the last few weeks.  I do want to make it clear that February 28th was the last mail in for this year.  We will continue to collect box tops and milk caps and to mail them in the future, so please do not stop saving them.  As Krista Lauring moves into Middle School next year, I am assuming that her mother, Kathy, might want to pass the box top collection on to another Lower School parent.  If you would like to help us out, please let me know.  It is a wonderful way to volunteer without having to spend time at the school, so it is a great project for working parents or a parent who is home with a younger sibling.

On Monday, March 5th we have an informational coffee for potential families interested in Lower School. This is a very informal way to find out about the school.  If you have neighbors or friends who have even wondered about MPA, this is a good time to come. For people who missed our open houses or don’t like big crowds, this is a much more intimate venue.  For people who don’t want to call for a private tour, this is a good way to get started.  You may even accompany your guest if you would like to do that as there is always plenty of coffee and goodies.  Since it begins at 9:00 a.m. on a week day, most people do not have to worry about their children so it is a nice alternative to the open houses which are always on the weekends.  Please pass the word on and invite people to come and see the school.

Monday is also the only Chess Club we have for March because we will be on vacation for the third Monday.

Tuesday we are having our annual beach day.  The cafeteria will be decorated for the theme and lunch takes place on beach towels on the floor.  Children may wear hats and sunglasses and will be provided with leis at lunch.  After school, they will be able to attend the beach party if you have turned in the beach party slip and your $5.  All in all, it should be an exciting day.

Friday is our last day of school before our two-week spring break.  We will be on assembly schedule and have Ben Franklin visit from Historical Perspectives.  The children will gather to hear from this historical character and will watch him transform from a young boy to the adult he became.  It is always a treat.

If you are planning on using Panther Club during spring break, please return your registration by March 2nd.

I think you can quit thinking snow now.

Have a wonderful break with your children.
