When I was growing up, I would have been ecstatic to have met my favorite author, Louisa May Alcott.  I remember how eagerly I would wait until my next trip to the library so I could pick up another book by her.  I was definitely able to relate to the excitement of the Lower School children when they met Mark Teague this past week.  Many of them already owned a book by him, and our librarian, Nancy Lage, made sure that all had heard at least one of his books. The children were well versed on both his writing and his art work which made the visit that much more meaningful.  They also made Mark feel welcome by making signs that were put on the wall and buying many of his books to sign.  It was amazing to watch him draw and to have a chance to ask him a myriad of questions.  The children were a wonderful audience.  They listened attentively and were very engaged.  Thanks to Nancy Lage for arranging such a terrific experience for our children. 

Thank you for all of the food you have provided during conference week.  It gives teachers a chance to gather when they have a break and to nourish themselves both physically and mentally.  Finding the energy to both teach and conference can be challenging, but we feel it is so important to make this connection with families early in the year.  Due to conferences, there are no classes tomorrow, September 28th.

Don’t forget to come hear Rick Lavoie speak on raising children in the 21st century.  He is a nationally renowned speaker and has a lot of practical suggestions for parents.  He will be speaking at 7:00 p.m. on the October 9th in the Nicholson Center.  Extend the invitation to any of your friends or neighbors whom you think might be interested.  Please let the Lower School office know if you plan to bring your children and we will provide care for them.

The 11th of October is Kindergarten Family Night.  Kindergarten families are invited to partake in a potluck supper.  After supper, the children will participate in activities with our Upper School peer counselors while the parents work with Lisa Woodruff, the MPA psychologist.  It is a wonderful chance to meet other parents and to discuss issues relevant to kindergarteners.

The 12th of October from 8:30-9:30 a.m. we will have our first Lower School Parent Meeting in the gallery.  You will get further notice from the Parents Association as to the agenda.  That evening is the annual Cultural Fair from 5:00-8:00 p.m. which provides entertainment and food for you and your children to experience.

Lots of things to reserve dates for and all of them provide opportunities to meet other parents and families.
