Do you have a Story to Tell?

Everyone has a story to share, but some people are better at telling their story than others. The second graders have studied the art of storytelling and, after many weeks of practice, had the opportunity to retell a story to a group of supportive adults (parents).

Storytelling-2.jpgDuring the month of February, the second graders were introduced to a variety of genres, spending a great deal of time reading different types of literature.  Eventually, they chose their favorite genre and selected one story from this genre to retell as a storyteller.  At the end of February, two storytellers from the company Wonder Weavers visited the second grade to share some of their favorite stories and teach storytelling skills to the classes.

Storytelling-3.jpgFollowing this visit, the second graders read through their own stories to determine the most important events.  Using these events, the students created a story board with sketches and sentences portraying the most essential happenings from their stories in the proper sequence in which they appeared.  The story boards were laminated and could be used as a guide while the child was practicing the story as well as at the final presentation.

The big day arrived last Friday and the parents came to school in droves.  After a group presentation, the children and adults were scattered about the school to listen to a variety of storytellers.  After the presentations, the adults and children gathered together to celebrate the successes and to share a cookie and punch.  A perfect example of MPA creating a safe environment for children to try something new. A tremendous way to build confidence in speaking in front of a group.
