Since we all thought spring was just around the corner, we started the week with our annual Beach Party Picnic.  Parents came in and decorated the cafeteria, the tables were folded up after Middle School lunch, and the floor was cleaned.  Then the Lower School paraded into the cafeteria with sunglasses, hats and beach towels in toll.  Yes, we had a picnic in the cafeteria on our beach towels while sounds of the Beach Boys played in the background.  The children get into the mood of spring break with a flurry and have a wonderful time pretending they are at a beach having a picnic!

Later in the week, parents returned to help with the Third Grade Cooking Extravaganza. Having studied about foods from other cultures and after reading multicultural literature, the third graders tried cooking their own multi-cultural lunch.  Parents were present at each station as the children prepared a variety of foods and then the children filled their plates with a taste of each item.  I was an official taster and the food was terrific!

The last day before break, the fourth graders participated in their annual Vocabulary Parade. Each child found a word unique to them and then created a sign with the word and definition on it.  To add to the festivity, they then dressed in a manor to illustrate the word they selected.  As the parents waited in the cafeteria, the students entered one at a time announcing their word and its definition.  Then the group paraded on to each classroom, repeating the demonstration.  I think some children will forever remember the definition of burgeoning or foliage after seeing the young ladies whose greenery was surrounding them! What a wonderful way to celebrate words and introduce new vocabulary.
