Kindergarten students just completed a wonderful unit traveling around the world. They learned about the seven continents and investigated countries within each one. They loved discovering the native dress of a variety of cultures, trying the games from different countries and in some cases, tasting food representing the countries. Below are pictures of the sticks painted by the children in order to play the game "Pass the Stick." Notice that the sticks are painted the colors of the Ghana flag as this is where the game is often played.

It was especially meaningful to the children when they landed upon a country where a peer of theirs was born or had the opportunity to visit. Then the classmate was able to bring in artifacts from that country and speak to their friends from real experience. The children were amazed that Tyler had actually seen a real kangaroo and koala bear . . . and the Australian biscuits and vegemite completed the experience. They were also intrigued to find out the province of China in which Cecelia was born. They admired the beautiful clothing that both Emily and Cecelia brought in to share

Notice the authentic boomerang that Tyler brought back from Australia.
The animals were of high interest in all of the countries. The children loved finding out which animals were native to each continent. Here it was difficult to bring to school the "real thing," but many stuffed animals seemed to suffice. These kindergarteners now consider themselves world travelers. Next they will be asking their parents for a real trip to far away lands!
