They brought in a beautiful life-size model of the torso, which the children were interested in, but what really caught their attention were the real pigs' hearts that were unveiled.  Ms. Wiatros, a RN on the team, disected two pigs' hearts as the students watched.

Then, with gloved hands, the children were able to feel the muscles of a heart as well as the valves and other membranes.LS-31.jpgLS-27.jpg

The students were mesmerized and truly engaged.  As they go on to study the circulatory system, I think they will often reflect back to that actual heart and better understand how the entire system works.  This is a great example of the hands-on experiences we talk about at MPA.
