Smell the Roses

The sweet unmistakable sound of women's voices drew me to the open doorway of the choral room one morning this week. On the way from somewhere to somewhere with no real time to spare, I hesitated. Shall I be late for the next "somewhere?" It's just not possible to miss an opportunity to drink in some of those incredible sounds.

Zero hour women's chorale rehearsal. How can they make those ethereal, otherworldly sounds at that early hour, before the school day is even officially underway and after a late night (for many of them) of rehearsals for the musical?

So I'll be a few minutes late while I stop to smell the roses. It doesn't even bother me that it's only a rehearsal, which means backing up and running over that cluster of musical phrases a few times, breaking it down into alto and soprano, hearing the parts individually.

A hallway eavesdropper gets a brief view into the inner workings of how that effortless sounding sound is not, after all, effortless at all but the product of hours of detailed work.

April to May at MPA has the gears heating up, the temperature rising and the activities coming in rapid succession, leaving no time to smell the roses. All the sweeter they smell when you know there's really no time to stop.

So do it. Take the time, take a breath, enjoy this wonderful springtime in the lives of our children. It only comes around once - until next year, that is.
