From Bridges to Sonnets

Thanks to the generosity of several MPA families, teachers have been learning new things about how we all learn differently and how to apply that in the classroom.  Next Tuesday, the learning continues for the MPA community - and you are invited!

Over the summer, six MPA teachers and administrators representing all three divisions attended five-day “All Kinds of Minds” workshops at various locations across the country.  The workshops are based on the pioneering work of Dr. Mel Levine, who writes that “the brain of each human is unique.  Some minds are wired to create symphonies and sonnets, while others are fitted out to build bridges, highways, and computers; drive trucks and taxicabs; or seek cures for breast cancer and hypertension.”

In August, our six emissaries to these workshops came back to school and began sharing what they’d learned with the rest of us.

Next Tuesday, all faculty will attend a special workshop for teachers, led by Rick Lavoie, who will present to faculty on strategies for motivating students.  Then, in the evening, parents, friends and visitors will have the opportunity to hear Rick present on the topic “Parenting Today: Unique Pleasures and Unique Pressures.”  Enjoy coffee and dessert before the program, courtesy of the Parents Association.  The Lavoie presentation for parents begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Nicholson Center.

During the MEA workshop sessions, all faculty will come together and explore some of the common themes of these two approaches to supporting learning in schools.

Supporting different learning styles – from computer builders to sonnet writers - has always been a strength at MPA.  This year, thanks to the generous support of MPA families, we’re getting even stronger.

Hoping to see you Tuesday evening!
