Email and Conferences

Malcolm Gladwell, in his book The Tipping Point, talks about an immunity that has built up to email. When email was new, we all eagerly read our four emails a day and responded with in-depth, well thought-out paragraphs. Now we all get dozens and rather than treating them as separate, important communications they tend to be seen as interruptions in what is important. Ironically, at the same time we have subconsciously devalued email, we rely on it more and more for communicating. This is why parent-teacher-student conferences are so important—it gives us all a chance to cut through the clutter of our inboxes and talk directly about our children. This Thursday and Friday we have conferences for grades 7-12, and in February we have them for grades Pre-K through 6. Please just remember that, whether you are conferencing this week or not, one of the things that makes education work for kids is the willingness of teachers and parents to communicate directly with each other and with our students. Even if it’s by email!

Next Friday (December 8) we have a seventh and eighth grade dance. If you are the parent of a seventh or eighth grader and you’re looking for something to do while your kid learns to line dance, please make plans to attend PIE Night. A mailing went out earlier regarding this Parents Association event, but if you need more information contact Robin Brooksbank at
