Robbie Seum, Nansee Greeley and I just returned from a two-day conference in Chicago, hosted by the Independent School Association of the Central States (ISACS). Also being our accrediting body, ISACS runs a series of professional development workshops, with the one we attended for division directors. In addition to hearing noted educational theorists Alfie Kohn and Michael Thompson (both were wonderful), we had a chance to meet and share ideas with division directors from schools similar to Mounds Park Academy. I think Robbie, Nansee and I came home with some valuable new ideas, but the thing I realized most was that MPA is, even compared with our peers, a special place. I did not hear of another school with as dedicated a staff, or as motivated and enthusiastic a student body, or as supportive a parent group. MPA is a special place, and I am so thankful that I can come to work here (and send my kids here!) every day. Thank you.
Friday, February 9th, our 7th and 8th grade students will have an opportunity to hear four 12th graders give their Senior Performances. Every MPA senior is required to present to the MPA community (sometimes just to those in their grade, sometimes to a larger group), and these presentations are invariably thought-provoking and sometimes quite moving. Twelfth graders share their hopes and dreams, as well as what they have learned while at MPA. We are fortunate that, because our students are all in one building, we can at times have our younger students attend assemblies such as these. If you know an MPA 7th or 8th grade student, please be sure to ask them about what they learn on Friday--it should be fascinating.
Sunday, February 11th is our annual Winter Open House for prospective students. If you have a current MPA 8th grade student, please encourage him/her to attend as well. This is a great opportunity to meet Upper School teachers and learn about clubs and activities in grades 9-12. And of course, if you know someone interested in MPA (regardless of grade), bring them along!
Finally, on February 15th, our 7/8 Band is performing for the Minnesota Music Educators Association. MMEA annually chooses the best middle school band in Minnesota to perform at their conference, and it is a tribute to our band students that they were chosen this year!
