As I write this message, the halls are hopping with a blend of pre-break adrenaline and sugar-induced bounciness--and that's just the faculty!
We are all looking forward to a couple weeks of downtime, and hopefully some changes we've made in the Middle School over the past year will help students and parents enjoy vacation time a little more. Many classes are closing the books on grades on December 21st, so kids have fewer courses to worry about as they head off campus. Additionally, we no longer allow major tests, projects or papers to have due dates the week after winter break, so ideally kids can have some true time away from studying and the stress that can impose.
Of
course, it shouldn't be solely about TV/computer/videogames over break,
and I encourage every child to read for pleasure while on vacation. Studies
show a strong correlation between pleasure reading and future academic
success, so there is a good academic reason to encourage reading at
home. The most important reason to pleasure read, though, is contained in the description of the activity itself--it's pleasurable! For
me, there's nothing better than immersing myself a good
mystery--science fiction when I was a kid--and trying to figure out
"whodunit."
And speaking of books, the MPA Book Festival is scheduled for the week of February 25th-28th. The
Parents’ Association portion of this week's eCommunication has details
regarding plans for the Middle School Café, but I thought I'd take a
moment to give you a quick introduction. This year's theme is "Under the Ice" and, as always, they are looking for volunteers and donations to help decorate. In
particular, we'd appreciate icicle or snowflake lights, lighted
penguins, white lace by the yard, bubble wrap, interesting clear
plastic shapes, and used books. And if you're interested in volunteering, please email Jane Neumann at neuchun7@earthlink.net. The café is always a highlight for Middle School students, so my thanks in advance to everyone who helps make it so special!
From all of us here, have a wonderful and restful break, and let me know if you read a good book while on vacation!
