Dr. Reid Smith, a graduate of The Juilliard School, will again be offering private piano lessons at MPA on Wednesdays after school. Lessons begin the week of September 12. In addition to private lessons, Pre-Piano Classes for Pre-School–First Grade will be available immediately after school on Wednesdays.
Dr. Smith has been teaching piano lessons at MPA for 22 years. If Wed. is not possible to arrange for a student, he also teaches in Dellwood and in Minneapolis on other days of the week.
Group Classes, a computer lab, and three recitals are offered each school year in addition to the private lessons. An innovative summer program is available, and qualified students may also be invited to join him in Europe for additional summer studies. In July-August 2010, he brought 39 students and observers to the International Piano Festival in Varallo, Italy. In August 2011, 47 piano students, ages 6-22, teachers, and observers joined him at the Norma International Music Festival near Rome, Italy where he was on the faculty with professors from Spain, Bulgaria, and Italy. Additionally, some students are given the opportunity to perform in New York City or to participate in master classes with international artists at his home.
Reid has taught piano at The Juilliard School, Kent State University, St. John’s University in St. Cloud, and the University of Minnesota. He has toured throughout the United States under the auspices of Columbia Artists. He is frequently asked to serve as a judge at international piano competitions and to be on the faculty of international music festivals in France, Mexico, Spain, Italy, and Azerbaijan. He has recorded two CDs including the complete Chopin Etudes.
