We all like having someone read to us and so this is my lucky month! Each first grader has scheduled an appointment to come and read to me. The children are diligent about practicing their book at home so that they can feel comfortable reading to the principal and when they are done each receives a button that says, "I read to the principal."
I start every morning listening to three or four readers. It is a magnificent way to start the day. What is really intriguing is not the actual act of reading by a first grader but rather the book each child painstakingly chooses and why that selection is important to them. Some children want to hear me laugh, others want me to hear a story they are sure I have never heard before. Some choose one of their own favorites and others want to impress me by walking in with a really thick book to read :). It doesn't matter what the selection is or how difficult the reading level, it is simply a wonderful way to start off the day.
Kudos to those first grade teachers who get the children interested in reading and stimulate them daily with new things to read.
As you head off for vacations over the spring break make sure to take a few good books along to share.
