Last Friday, I was involved in a family interview that involved a Mom, a Dad, a prospective student and our Acting Admissions Director, Renette Stinson. In the past two years, I have been involved in many family interviews. Just as people are different, no two interviews are the same.
Last Friday's interview is one that will stay with me because of the answers that were given to a question that is asked near the end of every interview. What are the top three things that you are looking for in a school?
When Renette Stinson asked this question, Mom, Dad and the student all began their response with, "safety". So what is school safety? Is it safe playground equipment? Is having a metal detector at your front door school safety? Is it having a police officer in our building?
While those might be part of school safety, I believe that the National Middle School Association (NMSA) has a better idea on school safety. The NMSA believes that successful schools for young adolescents provide school-wide efforts and policies that foster health, wellness, and safety. They go on to say that a school that fosters physical and psychological safety strives to build resiliency in young people by maintaining an environment in which peaceful and safe interactions are expected and supported by written policies, scheduled professional development, and student-focused activities.
The next time you talk to your student about their day at MPA, I have an assignment for you. Keep track of the stories or comments that give evidence to a student-focused environment. Having the freedom to choose a research topic, report on a story of choice or work in a group are just a few examples. I would guess that many of the stories or comments you hear are student-focused. This type of student-focused culture is not only good for student learning, it is good for your child's physical and psychological safety.
