Books Will Rule at MPA's 2012 Book Festival

Mounds Park Academy Parents Association
Book Festival Week

March 5-9, 2012
"Kingdom of Reading - Where Books Rule"

Book Festival.jpgEach year a theme inspires book selections for purchase, decorations, and activities coordinated by many volunteers. This year the Book Festival theme is "Kingdom of Reading - Where Books Rule."The Parents Association Book Festival is a school-wide event focused on reading, books, and fun. While it is primarily a community building event, it also supports the school's commitment to reading and, through a percentage of the proceeds from book sales, raises funds for our library.

There are new books from Valley Bookseller and Usborne for purchase for personal use, as wish-list items for faculty and staff, or to donate to the library collection. Additionally, used books are donated by the MPA community and sold the week before and during Book Festival.

Our Lower School students have their special space in the Gallery where they gather and explore the many books. Lower School students partner with Upper School students to read together, prepare Readers' Theatres, and create art about their favorite books. The Kreischer Gym undergoes a magical transformation, and opens this week to serve as the Middle School Café for our 5th - 8th graders. The Café offers new and used age-appropriate books, as well as snacks and beverages, available for purchase. English classes and advisories are invited in throughout the week.  Students can also bring their lunches in and hang out in this unique venue that focuses on books, reading, and fun.

The Upper School holds its Book Fair at Barnes and Noble at the Maplewood Mall.  Student organizations will have the opportunity to be showcased and there will be a space for student performances. A portion of the proceeds of all sales in the store that day will go towards our library.

The Book Festival finale is Family Night! The MPA community comes together for dinner, activities, and entertainment. Our Upper School students have the opportunity to share in the excitement of the evening by assisting with activities while earning community service hours.

How can you get involved?

For starters, consider joining one of the planning committees. If your volunteer time is limited, there are abundant opportunities for short-term help in decorating, setting up books, assisting with used book sales during a LS lunch hour or Lower School library times in the Gallery, staffing the Café during a lunch hour or the Pizza Party, cleaning up, activities on Family Night, or photocopying. You can also support the Book Festival by simply donating books from home so they can be sold as part of the fundraising efforts for the library.

Of course, if you have an idea on improving the week, please contact one of the committee members.
