CONSIDERING
UPPER SCHOOL AT MPA?

Maturity. Leadership. Ingenuity. Integrity. By the time our students graduate, they have found their voice and are ready to discover their place in the world. Our Upper School students get lost in learning. They dive in and become engaged in an aggressive curriculum that continues to spark a love of learning. Upper School is where it all comes together and you see the cumulative effect of an education that is a gift.

Let us tell you more...

MPA Senior Speaks at State Capitol

Beth.jpg
Senior Beth Larson has always been interested in HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.  Beth joined MN-TAP (Minnesota Teens for AIDS Prevention) as a way to share her knowledge on the subject with peers.  On March 18th, Beth spoke at the AIDS Action Day 2008 held at the State Capitol to make her voice heard.  The goal of the event was to raise awareness about the need for public health policies and education to reduce the impact of HIV in Minnesota.  In her speech, Beth indicated that, "I'm fortunate I was provided with this education during my school experience," but wants others to have the same information.

Upper School Students Selected to All State

Carl Runge and Pete Simpson were selected to participate in the Minnesota Music Educator's Association (MMEA) All-State Instrumental program.  They will attend summer camps at the University of Minnesota Duluth and the College of St. Benedict in early August.  Carl will be a member of the All-State Jazz Ensemble for the second year.  He will be working with guest conductor Robert Washut from the University of Northern Iowa.  Pete will be a member of the All-State Orchestra and working with conductor Manny Laureano, principal trumpet of the Minnesota Orchestra and co-music director of the Minnesota Youth Symphonies.  The All-State groups will reconvene in February 2009 at Orchestra Hall to play for the MMEA Mid-Winter Clinic.

Keeping in Touch with "Mr. Ed"

John-Ed.jpg

Five English 9 students in Marilyn Shardlow's class are corresponding with the students of former MPA teacher John Edmundson (a/k/a Mr. Ed) who is currently serving in the Peace Corps in Tanzania.  The five girls - Cera McDonald, Greta Stacy, Charal Hatfield, Maggie Harper, and Hannah Arsenault - have become pen pals with the students from the Kongei Secondary School in Lushotoa, Tanzania.  They look forward to a long and fruitful dialogue between the two schools.

Upper School Parent Meeting

The next Parent Group on Student Learning meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 13th, in the Large Conference Room.  The meeting will take place from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.  We will discuss Books on Tape, web page links for Student Services, and begin planning for the 2008-2009 school year.

2008 Presidential Scholar

Senior Nancy Dietman was selected by the Commission on Presidential Scholars as one of the 2008 Presidential Scholars.  One young man and one young woman have been chosen from each State, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.  The Scholars have all demonstrated leadership, scholarship, contribution to school and community, and outstanding accomplishments in the arts, sciences, humanities, and other fields of interest.  The scholars have been invited to National Recognition Week in Washington, D.C., in June.
