Passing local legislation. Helping a Kindergartner find the library. Forming school clubs that reflect personal interests and passions. Taking first place in Quiz Bowl – in the nation! At MPA, Upper School students dive right in and become highly engaged participants in their educational growth.
At Mounds Park Academy, Upper School is a place where students get lost in learning. While grades and test scores will always be an important part of the formula, we also expect students to become fully immersed in what they’re studying. Students learn to synthesize complex concepts and solve challenging problems with confidence. We believe that knowledge without context or passion is just a set of facts that will soon be lost or forgotten. A love for learning lasts a lifetime.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
At this age, the pendulum swings back and forth; students are full of confidence and independence but also need and want support and guidance. MPA teachers understand and intuit the shifts, providing just the right balance of reinforcement and room.
We’ve designed a rigorous Upper School program to ensure our students are well prepared for college and beyond, while being deliberate about affirming each student’s personality, interests and opinions in the classroom. Our community is quick to notice and celebrate accomplishments because success in one area can often spark success somewhere else.
OUR PROGRAM
Our Upper School curriculum is challenging and compelling. It’s infused with thoughtful integration so the connections between concepts and different subject areas are rich. Choral students decipher the physiology of vocal chords. Western civilization and western literature classes probe the Napoleonic War from two angles. The spring play conquers a snag when a group of students solve a prop problem through a physics calculation.

By the time students reach Upper School at MPA, they have learned how to put together the pieces and analyze from a variety of viewpoints. Whether studying biological processes, constitutional law, or multiple languages, connecting things to the bigger picture gives students a broader perspective – which is an essential prerequisite for college and life. Through honors courses, independent study, advanced placement courses, electives and community service requirements, motivated MPA students take their abilities and ideas even further.
In Upper School, students become adept at balancing the high demands of a challenging course load, learning how to better manage their time and prioritize responsibilities. Our community maintains high expectations for all students, and we’re always there to offer guidance, support, encouragement and praise. We take pride in preparing balanced, confident, intellectually curious students to succeed and embrace the challenges that face them in college and beyond.
