By fostering leaders through their positive environment and providing students with world class internships. I know my love for politics and international affairs will only grow in D.C.

What are you most excited about as you embark on your college experience?
My university is located in a city unlike any other, and so I am able to gain a well-rounded education not just in a classroom setting. The whole city is the classroom; I emerge not just with a diploma, but with experiences that could only happen at GW. I am excited for the internship opportunities, visiting amazing museums, and the ability to take long walks in the National Mall.

What did you appreciate most about the college counseling process at MPA?
The college counseling staff, Ms. Pederson, director of college counseling, and my teachers were all there for me every step of the way. I couldn’t be more thankful for the endless support I received. Being a first generation college student means you need all the support you can get. Luckily, Ms. Pederson is well versed in what she does, and walked me through everything I needed to know.

What about your MPA experience has best prepared you for college?
At MPA I was pushed to take classes I would never have thought to take, and each and every single one of my classes has given me the tools I need for college and beyond. Through the MSON program I was able to solidify my love for Arabic, as well.

What is your advice for MPA’s Class of 2031 (kindergartners)?
Ask for help! There will always be someone who is willing to lend a hand and give you insight. Take the next years to learn about who you are and who you want to be.

Insights from Ms. Pederson, Director of College Counseling:
From the start, Rayaan’s college search process was driven by her interest in politics and service, so looking at schools in D.C. made perfect sense. She was incredibly dedicated to working on her college essays, which brought to life her genuine passion for helping others, both individually and through public service. As a previous recipient of MPA’s Service Award and Global Responsibility Mission Award, and as an intern on local campaigns, Rayaan had a lot of meaningful experiences to share. We spent a fair amount of time discussing her choices about which stories would best illustrate her values and achievements, and she went through many drafts. As always, we also planned for schools would meet her criteria in case the “dream school” didn’t work out, but happily there was no need for it—GW accepted Rayaan in their Early Decision round. I have no doubt that Rayaan will continue to make an impact as she continues her education in D.C. and brings her energy to new opportunities in service and politics there.

The 55 members of the Class of 2019 were offered admission to 107 different colleges and universities in 30 states, Washington D.C., and Canada. They will attend 44 different schools in 18 states and Washington, D.C. Learn more about MPA’s College Counseling program here!

As the 2018-19 school year comes to an end, we’re sharing the college choice stories of several members of the Class of 2019!
