They are currently reading &#8220;How to Be an Antiracist&#8221;\u202fby Ibram X. Kendi, and many of our students have also read <a href=\"https:\/\/justmercy.eji.org\/\">\u202f&#8221;Just Mercy<\/a>&#8220;\u202f by Bryan Stevenson, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/ta-nehisicoates.com\/books\/between-the-world-and-me\/\">\u202fBetween the World and Me&#8221;<\/a> \u202fby Ta-Nehisi Coates, and<a href=\"https:\/\/newjimcrow.com\/about\">\u00a0&#8220;\u202fThe New Jim Crow&#8221;<\/a> \u202fby Michelle Alexander. They also recommend to watch the Netflix documentary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=krfcq5pF8u8\">\u202f&#8221;13th<\/a>&#8221; \u202ffor those interested in understanding the evolution of systemic racism in our country.<\/p>\n<p>Some organizations that they are recommending support for right now are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blackvisionsmn.org\/\">Black Visions Collective<\/a>, which is Minnesota based, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themarshallproject.org\/\">The Marshall Project<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joincampaignzero.org\/\">Campaign Zero<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/blackfutureslab.org\/\">Black Futures Lab<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Students are emphasizing the need to exercise our democratic rights come November. <strong>The vote will drive change<\/strong>. \u202fIn our immediate community, 63% of eligible voters in the neighborhoods surrounding MPA voted in the last election, 10 points below the state average. This turnout makes is particularly important to mobilize our community to vote, so we are hoping to sponsor a lit drop campaign where we distribute voter registration and vote by mail request materials on doorsteps. MPA students are encouraging anyone who interested in expanding voting rights to do is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.state.mn.us\/elections-voting\/other-ways-to-vote\/vote-early-by-mail\/\">request a vote by mail ballot<\/a> to ensure their vote is counted and they can participate safely during this pandemic. For students who are not yet eligible to vote, they encourage them to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sos.state.mn.us\/elections-voting\/get-involved\/become-an-election-judge\/\">serve as an election judge<\/a> since there is a fear that there will be a shortage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student-led Social Consciousness Club at Mounds Park Academy has focused on resources for education and personal actions.
