Center For Inclusive Teaching And Learning

Known. Challenged. Supported.

OptimizedImage, citl,,OptimizedAt Mounds Park Academy, we believe that every child deserves to be known for who they are, challenged to become who they can be, and supported throughout their educational journey. This promise has guided MPA since its founding and comes to life each day through the relationships our teachers build with students, the individualized attention they provide, and our commitment to helping every child discover what's possible.

The Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning (CITL) deepens this commitment by bringing together the people, expertise, and resources that help students grow as learners and individuals. The Center recognizes that students arrive at school with different strengths, interests, experiences, and learning needs. Some may benefit from additional academic support, while others are ready for greater challenge and complexity. Many will need both at different points in their educational journey. At MPA, inclusive teaching and learning means recognizing these differences, removing barriers to learning, and creating opportunities for every student to participate fully, discover their strengths, and reach their potential.

The Center's reach extends well beyond individual student services. It will strengthen collaboration among educators, provide meaningful learning opportunities for families, and share MPA's expertise with the broader community. In doing so, the CITL reflects our belief that learning is a lifelong pursuit and that schools are strongest when students, educators, and families continue to learn and grow together.

Supporting And Challenging Every Student

Every student learns differently, and those differences are an important part of what makes a learning community vibrant. At MPA, we do not believe that students should have to fit a particular mold to be successful. Instead, we seek to understand how each child learns, recognize their individual strengths, and provide the appropriate combination of challenge and support.

The CITL brings together student services, specialized expertise, and collaboration among educators to make that individualized approach even stronger. Whether a student is navigating a learning difference, developing executive functioning skills, seeking additional academic challenge, or learning to advocate for themselves, the Center helps create the conditions for meaningful growth. Just as importantly, accessing support or enrichment is understood as a natural part of learning rather than something that sets a student apart from their peers.

Helping Neurodiverse Learners Thrive

Students with different learning profiles bring unique strengths, perspectives, and approaches to the classroom. The CITL helps neurodiverse learners thrive within MPA's rigorous academic environment by providing specialized expertise, coaching, and coordination of individualized support plans and appropriate accommodations. Working in partnership with teachers and families, the Center helps students access the curriculum, participate fully in school life, and develop strategies that support their success.

Providing Support Without Stigma
Every student encounters challenges at some point, and asking for help should be a comfortable and expected part of the learning process. Through the CITL, students can access academic and mental health support, tutoring, coaching, executive functioning guidance, testing accommodations, and targeted classroom or individual interventions. These services are designed to help students address challenges while developing confidence, independence, and the skills they need to move forward.
Challenging Students To Go Deeper
Inclusive teaching and learning is as much about providing greater challenge as it is about offering additional support. For students who are ready for greater depth, complexity, and challenge, the CITL works alongside classroom teachers to create opportunities for enrichment and deeper exploration. Through differentiation and individualized opportunities, students can pursue their interests, engage with more challenging material, and continue growing as curious, motivated learners.
Helping Students Understand How They Learn
One of the most important things students can learn is how they learn. Through coaching, reflection, and opportunities to practice self-advocacy, the CITL helps students better understand their strengths, recognize when they need support, and take increasing ownership of their education. These skills build confidence and independence while preparing students to navigate new challenges throughout school and beyond.
Bringing Educators Together Around Each Student
Students benefit when the adults supporting them communicate, collaborate, and share expertise. The CITL creates opportunities for classroom teachers, learning specialists, and outside professionals to work together to understand student needs, coordinate strategies, and strengthen instructional practices. This collaborative approach supports individual students while also helping educators continue developing their ability to meet the needs of a wide range of learners. The Center will also provide opportunities for professional learning, helping faculty and staff continue to refine their practices and bring new approaches to their classrooms.

A Resource For Families And The Broader Community

Children's growth and development do not happen in isolation. Families, educators, and communities all play important roles in helping young people become confident, capable, and engaged individuals. The CITL recognizes these connections and creates additional opportunities for adults to learn from one another, build relationships, and access expertise that supports children at every stage of development.

Through family education, community programming, and opportunities to gather and connect, the Center extends MPA's commitment to learning beyond the classroom. Some experiences will help families better understand their children's educational journeys, while others will explore broader questions about parenting, development, technology, relationships, and well-being. Many of these opportunities will also welcome educators and community members from outside MPA, allowing the Center to serve as a resource for the wider region.

Creating Spaces for Belonging and Connection
Relationships have always been central to the MPA experience. The CITL will provide welcoming spaces and opportunities for families to come together, share experiences, and build connections with one another. Whether through educational gatherings, informal conversations, or community programming, the Center will strengthen the sense of belonging that makes MPA such a special place for students and their families.
Extending Learning Beyond the School Day
Learning, exploration, and connection continue long after the final bell rings. MPA's Panther Programs offers before- and after-school care, school-break programming, summer experiences, and enrichment opportunities that give children additional ways to discover interests, develop friendships, and stay engaged throughout the year. While Panther Programs operates separately from the CITL, the programs will share the newly renovated space, creating a welcoming and flexible environment that supports learning, exploration, and connection throughout the day and beyond the traditional school year.
Helping Families Navigate Every Stage of Parenting
As children grow, the questions and challenges families face change. The CITL will provide access to educational programming, evolving resources, and expert perspectives on topics that matter to parents and caregivers, including learning and development, technology, mental health, relationships, and important transitions. These opportunities are designed to strengthen the partnership between home and school while giving families practical information and greater confidence as they support their children's growth.
Sharing MPA's Expertise With the Broader Community
MPA has long benefited from the knowledge and experience of its educators, families, alumni, and community partners. Through the CITL, that expertise can reach an even wider audience. Speakers, workshops, educational programming, and other opportunities will welcome participation beyond current MPA families, creating meaningful connections and conversations throughout the region. By sharing what we know and remaining open to learning from others, the Center will help strengthen not only our own community but also the communities around us.

CITL Distinguished Speaker Series

The CITL Distinguished Speaker Series brings MPA's commitment to lifelong learning beyond the classroom, creating opportunities for families, educators, and community members to learn directly from experts, engage in meaningful conversations, and explore ideas that shape how we teach, parent, and support young people. Through presentations featuring educators, alumni, and other thought leaders, the series connects our community with timely perspectives and practical knowledge.

This year's programming includes a five-part series presented in partnership with Phoenix School Counseling, exploring parenting and technology, supporting children through anxiety, understanding neurodivergent children and teens, and the developmental needs of the adolescent brain. Additional programs will feature MPA alumni and outside experts, and the popular Students and Screens program will return as part of the series.

Open to the broader community, the Distinguished Speaker Series reflects MPA's belief that learning is not limited to a particular age, grade, or classroom. By bringing people together around topics that matter, the series creates opportunities for meaningful conversations and shared learning that extend well beyond campus.

Bringing The Vision To Life

The Center for Inclusive Teaching and Learning is both an investment in MPA's future and an extension of the inclusive teaching practices and individualized support that have long been part of our school. While the dedicated physical space is still in development, the Center's approach is taking shape through coordinated student services, strengthened communication with families, and new educational programming.

The newly renovated space will bring together opportunities for individual study, collaboration, enrichment, and student support, along with places where educators and families can gather and learn. Designed to encourage connection and flexibility, it will provide a home for the many people and programs that contribute to inclusive teaching and learning at MPA. The renovation will also enhance the spaces used by Panther Programs, supporting the experiences and activities that take place beyond the traditional school day.

Construction is anticipated to begin in March 2027, with the Center scheduled to open in January 2028. In the meantime, the work continues, guided by the same promise that has defined MPA from the beginning: that every student will be known, challenged, and supported throughout their journey.
