Lower School Student Support

Mounds Park Academy believes in and supports the unique abilities of all students and implements a variety of best practices in and out of the classroom. In addition, MPA makes every effort to offer additional support and guidance for students with diagnosed and documented learning needs, physical disabilities, and/or mental health conditions.

In Lower School, academic support is available for students as an early intervention in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Students may meet with the learning specialist for additional support based on classroom performance or academic screening tools. Executive functioning and sensory support is also available. No formal diagnosis is required.

Students seeking mental health support may connect with the school counselor or school psychologist to process and work through challenges they are experiencing. Additionally, grade-level and care team meetings are a place for the school counselor to discuss (with the student’s permission) any support they need from their teachers or the school. Counselors are resources for all students, but especially students with a specific mental health diagnosis. Neither a formal support plan nor a formal diagnosis is required.

The following mental health supports are available at MPA:

Provide brief, short-term counseling and/or skills groups, as needed or by referral
Collaborate with teachers regarding student needs
Partner with parents and coordinate with outside therapists, if release is provided
Assist with accessing community mental health resources
Deliver social-emotional and mental health curriculum through classroom presentations
Facilitate annual depression and suicide screenings in middle and upper grades
