Meet The 2023 Athletics Hall Of Fame Inductees

September 8, 2023

Launched earlier this year, the Mounds Park Academy Athletics Hall of Fame celebrates the people whose talent, leadership, dedication, and support have helped shape MPA’s rich athletic tradition. Each year, the Hall of Fame honors outstanding alumni athletes, coaches, and Panther supporters by sharing their accomplishments and preserving the stories and moments that have defined MPA Athletics across generations.

The 2023 Hall of Fame class continues that tradition, recognizing individuals whose impact reaches well beyond wins, records, and competition. Their stories reflect the character of MPA Athletics and the lasting connections formed among teammates, coaches, families, and fans.

MPA is proud to introduce the 2023 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees:

Joe KordoskyJoe Kordosky, athletic director and coach

Joe Kordosky played a pivotal role in shaping MPA athletics during his 28 years as athletic director and coach. Among his proudest accomplishments was helping establish and develop the school’s athletic program, including MPA’s acceptance into the Tri-Valley Athletic Conference in 1992. The move created new opportunities for Panther athletes to compete for conference championships and earn recognition for their achievements, helping lay the foundation for the program’s future growth and success.

One of Joe’s favorite memories came in 2002 when both the boys and girls soccer teams qualified for the state tournament. The achievement generated tremendous excitement across the school and remains a defining moment in MPA athletic history. Throughout his career, Joe was guided by the vision of MPA founder Bob Kreischer, who emphasized creating the best possible opportunities and experiences for students.

Joe hopes he is remembered for his enthusiasm, optimism, and belief in what MPA athletics could become. Known for his approachable nature, sense of humor, and open-door policy, he enjoyed connecting with students and worked tirelessly to enhance the athletic experience. His leadership helped build a culture of support, school spirit, and opportunity that continues to benefit MPA athletes today.

Bev DochertyBev Docherty, teacher and coach

For 35 years, Bev Docherty's ongoing goal was to build a track and field team that was competitive, welcoming, and rewarding for athletes of all abilities. One of the highlights of her coaching career came in 2019 when MPA qualified an entire busload of athletes for the state qualifiers. They qualified for three relays and several individual events on the girls’ and boys’ teams: sprints, distance, and field events. The team came away from State that year with six All-State performers

Bev’s favorite memories span decades of athlete achievements and milestones, from coaching MPA’s first state champions and conference championship teams to celebrating relay titles, record-setting performances, and countless personal bests. Yet what stands out most are the relationships built along the way: families supporting athletes, teammates encouraging one another, and student-athletes working hard to reach goals that once seemed out of reach.

Bev believes athletics are an important part of a student’s overall education, teaching resilience, leadership, and perseverance. Her advice to athletes is to “trust your training” and have confidence in the work they have put in. She hopes her lasting impact at MPA was helping the community recognize the value of athletics as a meaningful part of every student-athlete’s growth and development.

Mason Ferlic '11Mason Ferlic ’11, alum athlete

Mason Ferlic’s time at MPA helped lay the foundation for a remarkable running career. One of his most memorable achievements came during his senior cross country season when he set a bold goal of winning the state championship and openly committed to pursuing it. After months of focused training and preparation, Mason achieved that goal in a dramatic race, an experience that deepened his confidence and reinforced the power of hard work and self-belief.

Mason credits MPA’s supportive environment and strong coaching for helping him develop both as an athlete and as a person. The lessons he learned through competition, perseverance, and teamwork helped prepare him for success beyond high school and fueled a lifelong passion for running. He looks back on his years at MPA as a time of growth, challenge, and enjoyment, surrounded by teammates who shared a common purpose.

Among the people who had the greatest impact on Mason were coaches Bev Docherty and Dan Ethier. Their mentorship extended far beyond athletics, teaching him the value of patience, preparation, and trusting the process. Mason’s advice to today’s athletes is to be bold in setting goals and fully commit to pursuing them. He believes the greatest rewards come not just from achievement, but from the dedication and growth that happen along the journey.

Caitlin Lock Coomes '01Caitlin Lock Coomes ’01, alum athlete

Having attended Mounds Park Academy from kindergarten through graduation, Caitlin Lock Coomes built a lifetime of memories through academics, athletics, and friendships. Some of her fondest memories include fall afternoons heading to soccer practice with teammates, the excitement of preseason sports, choir concerts, Heritage Fairs, and the countless everyday moments that made MPA feel like home.

Caitlin credits MPA with fostering both her love of learning and the strong sense of self that continues to guide her today. The school's supportive environment encouraged her to take on new challenges, whether on the soccer field, the track, or in the classroom. She especially appreciated the way teachers and coaches celebrated student achievements and worked closely with her family when they spent three months living in rural Chile during her sophomore year.

Among the people who had the greatest influence on Caitlin were coaches Mike Scinto, Al Greimel, and Bev Docherty, whose encouragement and confidence helped her grow as both an athlete and a person. Their mentorship, along with the support of countless teachers and coaches, left a lasting impression. In a fitting reflection of her enthusiasm for school, Caitlin likes to share that on the morning of her first day of kindergarten, she woke up at 3 a.m., put on her uniform and backpack, and announced to her parents that she was ready to go to school.
