As the 2016–17 school year comes to an end, we’re sharing the college choice stories of several members of the Class of 2017.

In what grade did you come to MPA? 8th

How did you come to choose the college that you did?
I absolutely love adventuring outdoors and being close to the mountains. The campus is gorgeous and I was very intrigued by the block plan that Colorado College has. After visiting the campus in April of 2016, I knew the school was a perfect fit for me.

What are you most excited about as you embark on your college experience?
I am excited to expand my friend group and meet people from all around the world. I am also eager to see how well the block plan will work for me. I can’t wait to go on block break adventures.

What did you appreciate most about the college counseling process at MPA?
The college counselors are some of the most incredible people I know. They helped me through every step of my junior and senior year, which gave me confidence in my decision-making. I would not have been able to do the work that I have done without the help of my counselors. It was especially helpful to begin the college search process as early as we did because it allowed me to be prepared and mostly stress free.

What about your MPA experience has best prepared you for college?
Joining this wonderful community was most likely the best educational decision I have ever made. Making close-knit friends at MPA has never been a challenge as everyone is unbelievably kind and considerate. Because of this, I have learned how to branch out from my shy personality and talk with others. I have been able to grow close with my teachers as well because I am able to come in and ask questions and they are always willing to help. From my experience at MPA, I have learned how to communicate my opinion both through writing and speaking and I have also learned to not shy away from asking questions.

What is your advice for the Class of 2029 (kindergartners)?
Discover what you truly love and continue to work at it. You will never regret working hard. It will always pay off in the end.

Insights from Ms. Pederson, Director of College Counseling:
One of the most responsible students I’ve ever worked with, Katie was a model of how to fully take advantage of MPA’s college counseling process. She used the Junior and Senior Seminar classes to their full extent, from researching and creating her college list, to writing and editing her resume, application, and essay drafts, to using scholarship search tools. Katie and I also met many times individually as she thoughtfully grappled with tough decisions about her top-choice school, which fluctuated through the year.  In addition, she and Ms. Hager worked together on scholarship applications. I’m confident that Katie will thrive in the block plan and beautiful natural setting of Colorado College, where she plans to pursue her interest in environmental science.

The 54 members of the Class of 2017 were offered admission to 113 different colleges/universities in 31 states, Washington D.C., and Canada. They will attend 33 different colleges/universities in 14 states. Learn more about MPA’s College Counseling program here! >
