Adrienne (DeMarais) Zertuche ‘03 put together a very impressive soccer resume playing for long time head girls soccer coach Mike Scinto.
In her storied high school career, she earned two Tri Metro all-conference awards, an All-state First Team award, and the Excel Award from the Minnesota State High School League for her leadership and community service. She led the Panthers to their first ever MSHSL state soccer tournament as a senior, scoring a team high 20 goals and recording 9 assists in that historic 2002 season.
Zertuche was also standout on the track and field team and played varsity basketball. On the track, she holds a place on the girl’s top ten lists in 12 different individual and relay events. She also has five school records including the long jump, which at 16′ 2, has stood since 2000. Zertuche was the Tri-Metro Conference champion in the 100m hurdles and qualified for the 2003 MSHSL state track meet in that event. A three-sport athlete, Zertuche’s athletic achievements and strong academics earned her the MPA Athena Award as a senior in 2003.
It was soccer that Zertuche chose to pursue in college, attending Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. “Soccer has always been my passion,” says Zertuche. “It was wonderful for me to be able to come to Emory and find an amazingly talented group of young women who share that passion.”
For the Eagles, she played both forward and goalkeeper. As a forward, she finished third on the team in scoring as freshman. Moving to goalkeeper for her sophomore year, she found her way onto several Emory women’s soccer top 20 lists including saves in a season, save percentage, goals against average, and wins. Her seven shutouts that year, tied for seventh most in a season in program history, earned her a spot on the University Athletic Association all-conference honorable mention team and helped the Eagles win the 2004 UAA conference championship. She was named UAA athlete of the week twice that season. She returned to forward as a junior and finished fourth on the team in scoring.
A true student athlete, Zertuche, who majored in Anthropology & Human Biology, was named to Emory’s dean’s list several times throughout her college career. She attended Emory for Medical School as well and is now an award winning OB/GYN in Atlanta.
