An MPA Black History Month showcase. Join us as we come together as a community to celebrate Black history, culture, and contributions through a powerful, engaging, and student-led experience for Rooted: A Black History Month Showcase on Wednesday, March 4, from 4-6 PM in the Family Commons, Nicholson Center, and Upper School Commons. Throughout February, students across all divisions have been exploring this year’s theme, Rooted, reflecting on history, identity, creativity, excellence, resilience, and community. Their learning and projects will culminate in a dynamic evening celebration that highlights student voice, artistry, and leadership.

The school building will open at 3:15 PM for visitors to tour student projects and displays throughout the divisions. The Family Commons will open at 3:30 PM, where guests can gather, enjoy light soul food prepared by the one and only MPA legend Chef Ronnie, and participate in interactive opportunities connected to this year’s theme. The Nicholson Center doors will open at 4:20 PM, and the showcase will begin promptly at 4:30 PM.

This year’s event will be hosted by Bdot, a North Minneapolis native, hip hop artist, and community builder known for bringing creativity, authenticity, and high energy to every space. A proud University of Minnesota graduate with a major in Communications and Youth Studies, Bdot uses storytelling, music, and intentional engagement to create spaces where young people feel seen, heard, and supported. She currently hosts for the Minnesota Lynx, Timberwolves, and the Golden Gophers, connecting audiences and inspiring community wherever she goes.

The evening will feature:

  • Performances by MPA students
  • A special performance by Step With Soul Steppers
  • A live set by Bakarii

Bakarii is a multifaceted artist and multimedia creative whose work lives at the intersection of sound, spirit, and story. Rooted in intention and elevated by rich vocals and immersive sounds, he crafts experiences that move both the body and the consciousness. A beloved former staffulty member of MPA, we are especially excited to welcome him home to perform. Whether on stage or behind the lens, Bakarii’s mission is simple—create art that awakens, connects, and lingers.

This celebration centers student leadership, cultural appreciation, and shared community. There is no cost to attend and no RSVP required. All are welcome.
