Cooper Olson is among the most talented and accomplished basketball players in Mounds Park Academy history, yet ask his teammates, coaches, classmates or teachers, and they’re more likely to bring up who he is off the court than his achievements on it.

Since graduating, Olson continues to give back, maintaining a strong presence at MPA basketball functions, including volunteering his time to assist with the team’s summer workouts and helping to organize MPA’s youth basketball camp. Read More

Declan Dahlberg ’18: University of Minnesota Track and Field and Cross Country

The youngest of three Dahlberg siblings, Declan Dahlberg watched his older brother and sister grow up as three sport athletes at MPA. When he got his turn in blue and white, he made the most of it. A cross country running, Nordic skiing and track and field athlete, Dahlberg’s name dots the record books in each sport.

In cross country running, Dahlberg earned IMAC all-conference in each of his four years, all-state in three of those years, and was involved in the two closest finishes in MSHSL cross country history. As a junior, Dahlberg narrowly edged out Matt Steiger of La Crescent by two tenths of a second to win the state championship, and as a senior, he finished second to Steiger by less than one one-hundredth of a second, despite running his personal best and the second fastest 5K in MPA history, 15:44.8. He was named team MVP as a sophomore, junior and senior and goes down as one of MPA’s most accomplished cross country runners of all-time. Read More

Emma Stacy ‘15: Scripps College Swimming

Emma Stacy ‘15 embodies the student athlete at Mounds Park Academy. As a competitive swimmer, she knew that without the right balance of athletics, arts, and academics, plus a healthy dose of joy, she could be susceptible to an early burn out. It was no surprise that Stacy, who swam for Metro United, MPA’s co-op swim team, always made sure to make swimming fun. “My favorite memory was carpooling to the pool with other MPA swimmers and jamming to songs in the car to get pumped up,” she said.

She was also, of course, a tremendously successful athlete. The 2012 Metro United athlete of the year, she qualified for the 2012 MSHSL state swim meet in the 200m individual medley. Because Metro United is a larger co-op, they competed at the AA level, making Stacy’s accomplishment even more impressive. Stacy also competed on the speech team for MPA, medaling at the state speech tournament three times. She was also inducted into MPA’s chapter of the National Honor Society. Read More

Evan Ferlic ’15: University of Minnesota Track and Field and Cross Country

With an older brother considered one of Minnesota’s most accomplished distance runners in recent memory, Evan Ferlic had some big shoes to fill. But with a list of accolades that looks like his brother Mason’s, Ferlic has proven he is up for the challenge.

Ferlic earned numerous all-conference and all-state honors, team MVP awards, multiple captainships and varsity letters in cross country running, Nordic skiing and track and field. But his two most important accomplishments both came as part of the team.

Ferlic played a critical role in leading the boys cross country team to a runner up finish at the 2013 state meet, their best finish ever. “This was a true team effort, since our top four runners were very close to each other in most of our races that season,” said MPA cross country coach Dan Ethier. “Evan’s contribution was critical. We couldn’t have accomplished this without him.” Ferlic’s success in cross country set the stage for an even more memorable track and field season. Read More

Helga Midelfort-Vognar ‘03: Carleton College Soccer

Late October nights in Minnesota tend to be cold and dark. Soccer players competing in section tournament games, played under the lights, bundle up any way they can.

Panther’s soccer standout Helga Midelfort-Vognar ‘03 remembers playing for the section 4A championship on one of those nights in October 2002. “Each person on the field was giving 100% to the point of exhaustion, watching the clock tick down. The entire parka-wearing bench was on their feet, carrying the field players with their voices and enthusiasm,” Midelfort-Vognar remembers. “When that buzzer finally sounded and the official’s whistle blew, one last rush of adrenaline propelled us towards each other in the middle of the field. WE WON! Sweat, tears, and teammates all piled together celebrating MPA’s first trip to state.”

For Midelfort-Vognar, that 2002 season was the satisfying culmination to four years of hard work. Helping to lead MPA to a 13-3-4 record and the section 4A championship as a senior, Midelfort-Vognar was named to the Tri Metro all-conference first team for the second year in a row, earned her fourth varsity letter and was named team’s most dedicated player. Jude Hull ’12: St. Olaf College Hockey

Jude Hull ’12 was like many of the new seventh graders starting at MPA in the fall of 2006. He was excited and eager to learn, perhaps even a little nervous. But he was certainly the only incoming Panther whose father and grandfather are hockey hall of famers. Hockey is literally in Hull’s blood. So, it comes as no surprise that even as he relished the opportunity to play other sports at over his next six years at MPA, including being named captain of the golf team, he was a hockey player first and foremost.

Fast forward to high school. Hull played three seasons for the SPA/MPA hockey team, earning a number of accolades. He was a two time Tri Metro all-conference honoree, including all-conference first team as a senior. That year, he was also team captain and MVP. In his junior and senior seasons combined, he recorded an impressive .856 save percentage. Read More
