Do you have room to spare? Space in your heart for another family member? A desire to expand your family’s perspective of the world? MPA is seeking host families for several international students for the 2019-20 school year.

Our new students this year are finding great success, experiencing near-daily “firsts,” and loving their MPA journey. Between the adults in their school and home lives, our students feel supported, nurtured, and loved while living so far from their families. This is vital to their success and the strongest testament to everything our MPA host families and staff do to care for our international students.

We would love it if you and your family considered hosting an international student for next school year. As you and your family consider hosting, some logistical questions may arise. The information below is by no means an exhaustive list, but it may answer some of the initial questions you have and prompt additions ones as well:

TRANSPORTATION

Host families are responsible for providing transportation to and from school and school-related activities.
Host families are responsible for providing transportation to and from the airport when the student travels.
Host families will work with their student in scheduling rides for social events.

STIPEND

A 10-month stipend of $9,000 will be directly deposited in equal installments of $900/month on the first of each month for the previous month, September through June.
An early installment of $500 will be deposited on August 1 in preparation of your student’s arrival; the remaining $400 will be deposited on September 1.
The daily stipend rate of $30/day will be taken from and disbursed to host families who are providing respite care for a student, as needed.

MEALS

All international students will receive the MPA school lunch. Host families and students do not need to pack lunches.
Host families are responsible for providing two meals on all weekdays and three meals on all weekend days.

ARRIVAL

New-to-MPA students are being asked to arrive over the weekend of August 17-18, 2019.
New students will have New International Student Orientation on August 20-23.
Returning MPA students will probably arrive on/near August 26, preparing for the first day of school on August 28.

By hosting an international student, you and your family have a unique opportunity to bring the language, culture, and perspective of another country into your home, allowing for a truly rich, intercultural experience. The students will love to share their lives with you while becoming a part of your family, exploring Minnesota, and enjoying MPA student life all at the same time.

Summer Enrichment with Mr. Purdy

Learning should truly be a magical, creative, hands-on process. “The Science of Harry Potter” summer enrichment class does just that and is the perfect vehicle for what Mr. Purdy likes to call “Imaginerring”—the joy of combining science and imagination. In class, you will use science and your imagination to create a Golden Snitch catapult, use chemistry to brew magic potions, create Troll Bogey magnetic sand, and so much more. Get ready to bring science to life! This class is for grades two through four, and will be held June 17-21, 10:40 AM-12:10 PM.

When it comes to teaching and learning, no one puts it better than Miss Frizzle from the Magic School Bus series when she says, “Take Chances, Make Mistakes, Get Messy.” In the “Let’s Make a Mess” summer enrichment class, we will do just that. If we can make it goop, platter, foam, pop, or fizz we will. Besides having a lot of fun getting messy, we will learn the science behind what makes it pop, fizz, splatter, and foam. Students in grades kindergarten through four are welcome to enroll in this class, and it will be held June 17-21, 9-10:30 AM.

From the Board’s Perspective: Sharing MPA

As someone who has spent the past 20 years in education from starting a school to working to close the achievement gap in underserved neighborhoods, I am somewhat of an education fanatic. I have travelled the country observing the impact of high performing schools. I understand the importance of quality programming, strong teachers, and a talented leader to successfully operate and deliver great outcomes for kids.

When exploring Mounds Park Academy for our three children nearly 11 years ago, expectedly, my school evaluation rubric was activated. With our youngest graduating next year, I now reflect on how fortunate we have been to call MPA home.

Through the years, I have looked for opportunities to share our love for MPA with others. When we approached our neighbors, Sally Doherty and Karen Weiss, about considering MPA, there was no hesitancy in affirming our MPA allegiance. However, Sally had worked closely with a local superintendent providing pro bono financial and general management assistance. She asked all the right questions and had her own very thorough questions and process. Karen and Sally engaged with Dr. Hudson and the leadership team to come to their own unique reasons for choosing MPA—but that all began with our recommendation.

Karli McGill ’03 Plays in Coaches vs Cancer

Karli McGill ’03 was selected to play in the Coaches vs Cancer NCAA basketball game this past weekend! The game was hosted by the American Cancer Society, and is for cancer survivors, caregivers, researchers, and healthcare providers. The game was held at the US Bank Stadium with two retired NCAA coaches, Jim Calhoun and Bo Ryan.

When she played basketball for MPA her number was 13, so she chose that number for the game. Congratulations Karli on a game well played! To watch a video of the event, click here.

Today Brings The Annual Alumni Challenge!

Today, April 9, 2019, we are challenging you, our alumni and parents of alumni, to show your support for MPA by raising $75,000 and making a difference in both of these critical ways:

Your gift to the MPA Fund covers the gap between tuition and other revenue and the daily operational needs of our school. These gifts provide the foundation for continued support of our outstanding faculty, curriculum, and students. Help to give the gift of an MPA education to more students today.
Your gift to Together, We Dream includes four specific projects that cannot be supported through annual giving or operations. We need your help to improve our facilities and grow our school’s endowment to support the future of MPA.

Meet MPA Parent Sungwon Koo

What do you love about MPA?
I love the warmth of MPA. That’s the reason that I chose MPA for my son who had come from so far away to the United States. Throughout the application, school tour, and interview process, I could feel the warmth, respect, and sincerity from teachers, interviewers, and staff. They are all proud of being an MPA family, which makes me feel confident. MPA has something special within their heart to care for students and care for families.

How is your child encouraged to dream big and do right at MPA?
MPA is open, flexible, and encourages students to think big and explore new things. Even though my son is not an athletic person, he immediately loved to run on the Cross Country Team and also enjoyed downhill skiing. When my son is planning and selecting courses and extra activities for next semester, he is happy and really excited about what he is going to choose. He wants to learn new things and is full of high hopes and expectations for classes and teachers.

What would you tell another family considering MPA?
If you want a school that takes care of your child like a family, come and choose MPA. Faculty, students, and families are all inclusive to foreign students and new families in general. Giving To The Foundation Of Our Community

What impact do you see the completion of Together, We Dream: The Campaign for MPA having on your family?
These renovations will be the culmination of many years of hard work for the entire community. As an alumnus, and former employee, the greatest impact will be being able to see current students learning, growing, and enjoying these spaces.

Why do you believe it is important to give to both Together, We Dream and to the annual MPA Fund as you would in other years?
The MPA annual fund helps keep MPA running on a daily basis. It ensures that the school as an institution continues to provide an excellent education and additional services and opportunities to the MPA community. Without the annual fund, there would be no school. On the other hand, the Together, We Dream: The Campaign for MPA is about moving MPA into the future, and about creating meaningful spaces for the entire community that fit our growing needs. Although it may feel overwhelming, especially for younger alumni like myself, I believe it’s extremely important to give to both this year because each has a unique and specific goal. Combined, these funds are the foundation of our community moving forward and effectively educating the next generation of MPA graduates.

Why do you choose to give to Together, We Dream even though you have graduated?
I give because it brings me joy. There is something special about knowing you have helped shape the community that raised you.

How do you see the four priorities (library, commons, cafeteria and kitchen, endowment, and outdoor track) of Together, We Dream impacting the student experience?
I am so excited for this next stage in MPA history. I remember as a middle schooler hearing about the library expanding into a new space and each year after, anxiously awaiting the updated version of one of my favorite spaces on campus. I’ll be honest, I’m a little jealous that I was not able to see this renovation happen as a student, but I know that these changes will have countless positive outcomes for the entire community.

What is your dream for the future of MPA and how do you see Together, We Dream working toward your dream?
My dream is that one day my own children will be able to attend MPA. I cannot wait for them to have some of the same experiences I had, but even more importantly, watch them create their own path and their own story in these new spaces.

The MPA Speech Team won the MSHSL Section 4A Speech Tournament on Friday, April 5 with more than double the points of the second place team. Congratulations to our Panthers and their incredible coaches!

What impact do you see the completion of Together, We Dream: The Campaign for MPA having on your family?
We hope our grandchildren will someday have the chance to study at MPA. We would like a first-rate school ready for them.

Why do you believe it is important to give to both Together, We Dream and to the annual MPA Fund as you would in other years?
It is important to reach deep once in awhile to support the large capital projects. It is equally important to continue annual giving to be able to sustain the capital investment.

Why do you choose to give to Together, We Dream even though your child has graduated?
We are giving to the endowment to establish a tuition scholarship. We believe it is important for families at all income levels to have access to the quality of education provided by MPA.

How do you see the four priorities (library, commons, cafeteria and kitchen, endowment, and outdoor track) of Together, We Dream impacting the student experience?
Although our focus is on the endowment, it is important for students to be proud of the school they attend. These improvements will add value to their educational experience.

What is your dream for the future of MPA and how do you see Together, We Dream working toward your dream?
Our dream is that the school is sustainable, that it maintains high standards throughout the next 20 years, and that it is accessible to all income levels.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your MPA experience?
As parents of an alum, we know how life-changing the MPA experience can be for a young person. Our son blossomed as a whole person after transferring into MPA in ninth grade.

Paying It Forward

There are freethinkers, free spirits, risk takers, right makers, dreamers, and doers who are standing up to support Together, We Dream. Here is one story that explains why. Meet Mike Velin ’06 and Ashley Cooper, MPA Middle and Upper School counselor.

What impact do you see the completion of Together, We Dream: The Campaign for MPA having on your family?
We think the improvements the school intends to make will have a large impact on our children for several reasons. There will be a direct benefit that they will receive by having new spaces to learn and explore in the library/common spaces, but also the ability to push themselves outside of their comfort zone by trying new things in the test kitchen. Indirectly, the new spaces will create a higher demand in a competitive independent school market. Not only will a more diverse student body be encouraged to come to our school, but a more diverse faculty will be excited to thrive and teach in our new space.

Why do you believe it is important to give to both Together, We Dream and to the annual MPA Fund as you would in other years?
At the end of the day, the campaign and our annual fund are two separate, but very key pieces to the overall health of our school. It’s planning for today, while investing for tomorrow. We need to stay competitive with other schools while providing a diverse setting in which students can learn—so we need to invest in our future with the campaign. While at the same time we need to also plan for our current students and faculty through the annual fund by bridging the gap between the cost of the school year and the amount of tuition paid—without this, there will be no future for our kids to reap the benefits of our investment in the Campaign.

Why do you choose to give to Together, We Dream even though you have graduated?
I continue to feel blessed and in debt to the school and community because without the friends, family, and faculty at MPA, I believe my path would be somewhere completely different than it is right now. I benefited from a caring group of individuals that gave everything they had to allow us to succeed and I want to make sure that I can help other children feel the same way too. We were raised on a spirit of giving back and I want to continue to that notion of paying it forward for the next generation.

How do you see the four priorities (library, commons, cafeteria and kitchen, endowment, and outdoor track) of Together, We Dream impacting the student experience?
Each priority has it’s own set of goals and students that it will impact, however ultimately all four will allow the school to continue its mission of intellectual ambition with the joy of learning.

What is your dream for the future of MPA and how do you see Together, We Dream working toward your dream?
Our dream for MPA is that all students feel comfortable and accepted for who they are and feel like they are a part of a community that they can thrive in by being themselves, while being pushed to step outside of their comfort zone. MPA will never be the right place, for all students. But we should work on being the best place for the students and families that we have.
